Natural Cosmetics Vs Traditional Cosmetics
In this post we will delve into the differences between Natural Cosmetics Vs Traditional Cosmetics in a simple way, to be able to understand the benefits of each other.
Let's clarify those popular myths of "Natural Cosmetics Is Not Effective". Something we hear from the conventional industry that wants to discredit us so much every day.
WHAT IS NATURAL COSMETICS?
The raw materials that we will find in Natural Cosmetics are of 3 types:
Plant Ingredients such as Almond Oil, Argan Oil, Olive Oil, …
Animal ingredients, such as Lanolin, milk, …
Mineral, such as Zinc, clays, …
We will also find within these cosmetic natural ingredients that are subjected to an industrial process to obtain a certain result. For example, in nature we do not find surfactants naturally, so we add ingredients as naturally as possible, handling them fairly to obtain the best results and naturally. We will call these substances "Natural Derivative". "Coco – Glucoside" is for example very common to find in Natural Shampoos. Extraction methods are often environmentally friendly.
WHAT IS ECOLOGICAL COSMETICS?
Surely many times you have wondered if an Ecological Product is the same as a Bio or Organic one, right?
Well, all these terms that are so fashionable are synonymous. In America for example you will find more the word "Organic", however, in countries like France or New Zealand more "Bio" is used. In Spain, on the other hand, the term we use most is the "Ecological".
Organic cosmetics use ingredients that, in addition to being natural, have been developed according to the criteria for Organic Agriculture established by the European Regulation. These criteria include the Non-Genetic Modification of seeds, the Non-Use of Chemical Fertilizers, Pesticides or Herbicides and respecting biodiversity to the maximum.
An Ecological Cosmetic Will Always Be Natural – But Not All Natural Products Will Be Ecological.
HOW DO I KNOW IF I'M BUYING NATURAL OR ECOLOGICAL?
An "Ecological" Product must always have on its label an Identification proving that that Product is Certified as such. The best known certificate companies are "Bioinspecta", "Acene", "Natrue", "Cosmos", etc…. each Certification Entity has its different Quality Standards and its own Standards, but is synonymous with Warranty and Quality.
We already know what differences we can find within Natural and Ecological Cosmetics. Next, we'll talk about Traditional Cosmetics.
WHAT IS TRADITIONAL COSMETICS?
So, in Natural Cosmetics, the basis is Vegetable Oils, in Conventional Cosmetics the basis is paraffins and petroleum products.
Conventional Cosmetics are a cocktail of chemicals. Some of these ingredients used are a health hazard. People are not aware that our skin also absorbs these substances. One of the most well-known cases is Parabens, which are used as a preservative in cosmetics and go in very small amounts, acting as Endocrine Disruptors, that is, mimic the action of our hormones taking their place and do so in infinitesimal concentrations. Being Non-Bioavailable Substances for our Agency, there are more and more people with Allergy problems.
ADVANTAGES OF NATURAL COSMETICS VS TRADITIONAL COSMETICS?
The main advantages of natural cosmetics are:
- He's not tested on animals.
- Quality ingredients.
- Increased bioavailability for the skin.
- More sustainable with the environment.
The main advantages of Traditional Cosmetics:
- Being Inert Substances do not proliferate bacteria and lengthen their conservation.
- You get more quantity, but worse quality of the raw material.
- "Bad Odors" are removed with chemical processes.
You already know a little more about Natural and/or Ecological Cosmetics and Traditional Cosmetics, now it is "You" who must make the decision to choose one or the other. We clearly bet on an Ecological and Quality Cosmetics.
When it comes to making a Natural Cosmetic we have it more difficult, to preserve, emulsify and get more pleasant textures, the raw material is much more expensive. For example, from one kilo of Camellia seeds we can naturally obtain approximately 300 ml per cold extraction, however, if we did it as in the chemical industry, from one kilo of seeds, we could obtain 700 ml of product, thanks to the application of heat or chemicals.
Naturally, we would get less quantity, but higher quality. However, in the traditional way we would get more quantity, but worse quality.
It's your skin, it's your decision.
